The Devil Is In The Widget

HORNS isn’t out until next week, but if you need something to occupy you until then, there’s the fun little widget featured above. It’s got video of me naked, lip-synching “Never Gonna Give You Up” talking about the novel, an excerpt, and links to news about the book. In the very near future, the widget will also offer a link to an iTunes playlist, IGGY PERRISH’S ROCK BIBLE, but for some reason Apple hasn’t yet approved the mix. Finally, the widget will helpfully point you towards people who can sell you the book. It’s easy to take the widget and stick it up on your own site if you like; my thanks to anyone who decides to make use of it.

But wait! There’s more! There’s a dedicated HORNS page here, and HORNS has been added to the drop-down FICTION menu. As you can see, I’ve kept the lash to the backs of my tireless web demons, who have been grinding away in the digital pit to keep the site up to date. Other websites are plagued by gremlins and ghosts in the machine; over here I think of them as my friends. More seriously, my thanks to Shawn and Tavia and everyone else at William Morrow/HarperCollins for all their work to put together the widget and all the other online materials for HORNS.

  3. Betsy Boo Says:

That is so cool! Now I just have to figure out how to put this widget on my GR profile! Gotta get the word out!

PS…I clicked on the playlist and nothing happened, but it could be because of my ancient, balky laptop.

  4. James Ashley Says:

BTW…laughed my arse off at the last part of the video.

  5. Nerak Says:

Ok, posted on FB. Loved Loved the last part! Soo cute!

Was trying to figure out all the places you were filmed..the only ones that I didn’t get was the woods, where the chain was…Stratham Hill Park? and what highway you were on…oh, wait, I think I just figured that one out, NM! LOL

Can’t wait to see y’all on Tuesday!

  6. Ross Warren Says:

Is it right that the UK release has been pushed back to 16th March?

  7. Lisa Says:

On the Waterstones site it says you’re doing signings in Nottingham and Liverpool – do you have any other UK destinations?

  8. Crystal Says:

Love that you’re honest about the real reasons you’re in it. Artistic integrity is for the week.

I figure on downloading Horns to my Kindle next week.

  9. Crystal Says:

For the weak. I hate people like me, who don’t look at their typing before they hit submit.

    That wasnt your average interview.lol.
that desk seemed a little short…noticed it because I always look for a certain height in desk so that i can lean back and not bump my knee.

    God, not Rick Astley!

FYI – if you put the widget on Blogger, it doesn’t go in the sidebar. It just transfers as a regular post. Which is fine, but I think it says in the instructions that it will go to the sidebar and it doesn’t. :-)

  13. CKHB Says:

Don’t worry, Crystal, we knew what you meant. I try to have a little integrity at least once a week myself.

    :-P

  14. DigDoug Says:

I had the opportunity to read the advanced reader’s edition of ‘Horns’ – just finished this morning – and have to say that I loved it very very much!

I likened my reading experience to a pinball game. I was bouncing off bumpers and flippers trying to see which direction the book would lead me in next.

Those are the best sorts of books, in my opinion.

  15. Jennifer Brozek Says:

I’m looking forward to reading the book. The last bit in the video made me grin.

  16. Vicki Says:

I have no idea how to use a widget. I tried but it didn’t yield the results I wanted, so I ask: How do you use a widget?
It’s not happening the way it does when my widgets are connected to The Dock on my Macintosh.

I wouldn’t have any idea how to download it to the Dock, b/c I’m not computer literate when it comes to Internet use.
I know only what I’ve been taught by my computer-systems analyst friend, but he hardly ever comes over or talks to me.

I’ll use another of my favorite phrases to explain what I mean: I tried to communicate with the widget, or get it to respond.
    “That dog isn’t barking.”
You can guess the movie I got the phrase from, a quote that came directly from the book.

  17. Vicki Says:

To DigDoug: It’s not nice to boast about getting to read the book already. Mostly joking. (hehe) I get the envies easily.
Well, my book is on the way. I don’t know how long it’ll take to make it through the massive storm I’m currently trapped in.
A massive amount of snow has fallen in the area, causing some people to be snowed in. They can’t get out to go to work.
I’m guessing that’s going to make my book delivery take longer.

  18. This_Girl Says:

    So excited!
I LOVE this lilttle widget/commercial/interview thing! That came out really great. Mr. Hill, you were so graceful stepping over that chain…I so would have gotten tangled up on that and landed face first in the snow.
Laughed a little too hard at the last bit of info…..

Kindle Users; I just got one and only have Under the Dome on it….Reading it and liking the “reader”, but I really want the actual hard cover book….how are you all doing this? Downloading whatever and still getting the actual books of certain authors? Just curious.

  19. FrAnCeScA Says:

I don’t have kindle. I want one. I haven’t read Under The Dome. I missed out on the lottery to get a signed copy. I’m reading Dracula right now. I got it for only $5.85 at the campus bookstore, taxes included. I have the DVD too. Francis Ford Coppola was and still is one of the best directors who ever lived. Sofia is pretty good too. I’ve seen 3 of her films. Her cousin Christopher is a mischievous rogue though.
Someone wants to show my first book at a festival in California.
I’m sort of averse to the idea since it was a piece of crap from 4 years ago that I no longer care about. My muse moved away a long time ago. This is why I’ve been so uninspired. Most of my inspiration these days comes from coworkers and ex-classmates.
I will probably read Horns after Dracula and before Under the Dome. I’m thinking Under the Dome is a lot more involved than It was. I read It when I was 19. And the number 19 seems to keep cropping up a lot in the fiction I read these days.
Done my shit now. You can stop shoveling.

  21. MattD Says:

Nice interview Joe. Really looking forward to the book. I even ordered the nice PS publishing copies. Looked like you had a collection of comic art up on the wall behind you in the video, couldn’t tell what any of them were though. Care to tell us a bit about your collection?

  22. ari Says:
