Locke, Stock & Barrel
Two Locke & Key related items:
First, when Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft was released in hardcover, I did a thing where folks could call and preorder a copy from a certain local bookstore, and I’d sign it for them. That seemed to work pretty well, so I thought I’d do it again with Locke & Key: Head Games, which is out later this month.

If you’d like to get your paws on a signed copy of Locke & Key: Head Games, put a call in to the River Run Bookstore in Portsmouth, NH, sometime between now and the 23rd of September. Their number is (603) 431-2100.
Before you pick up the phone, hang on a second, ’cause there are a few nitpicky ground rules. I’ll sign up to three books per household, but at least one of them has to be Locke & Key: Head Games. I can only personalize and doodle in one. Remember that you’ll be paying cover price and shipping costs. Finally, every effort will be made to deliver your orders in mint collection. But no one can promise your books won’t pick up a scuff or something in shipping. River Run Books can’t offer refunds.

Secondly, I want to give a head’s up that today sees the release of LOCKE & KEY – SPECIAL EDITION, which reprints the first issue from “Welcome to Lovecraft,” the script, and, best of all, a color release of “Freddy Wertham Goes to Hell.” Some of you know the story behind “Freddy,” but to recap for those who don’t: this was the second comic I ever wrote, and my second collaboration with artist Seth Fisher, a blazing talent who passed away far, far too young. Seth was midway through his work on “Freddy” when he died, and the pages were finished by his best friend, the equally gifted Langdon Foss. I’m delighted to see the story get a big color release (it was originally published in b&w) and I hope people will give ‘er a look. You can learn more about Seth’s life, and view lots of his work, here at his website, floweringnose.com.

So sad to lose one so young and talented.

How random! Today I just met and got a signed book by one of my favorite authors, Mike Carey. I just might hit you up on your offer, Joe.

Thanks so much Joe! I got the HC “Welcome to Lovecraft” this way and I am definitely calling River Run to get my “Head Games” the same. I’m really looking forward to this…especially the “extras” included! I hope I can get the entire HC run of L&K signed by you!

I echo Betsy Boo’s words. (Hmm, hi Betsy!). River Run. Right on.

(I miss you Barry.
Hope all is well!)

Yep, Mary and I are very thrilled that Joe is taking the time to do this.
On another note, Seth Fisher had a unique style and is very much missed.

I didn’t know Seth Fisher. He sounds like a talented individual. I feel excited about Locke & key. It’s my favorite comic. Actually it’s my ONLY comic. I never seem to make it to conferences and signings. But I found one of your clips at Youtube. You should do audio books. You have a nice voice. It’s a comfort to me. It’s like a lullaby. You’re very sweet and sensitive… kinda like that English boy who politely said “Cheers” and “Sorry” in the supermarket today. Some people can melt your heart…even if you’re an ice queen.
“How wonderful life is…when you’re in the world.”

My damned (don’t really mean it) comic store only
received one, yes one, copy of the special edition.
Someone had already picked it up. They saw myself
walk through the door…and boom they got on the
line for another one.
okay, okay…I made myself sound bigger than I am,
but I’ll have a copy in a few weeks…it’s on order.
By the way, I’ll be ordering Head Games from River Run.
Please make sure a buffalo chews on it and that there’s
plenty of pizza sauce on it…somewhat a paraphrase by
Joe…not quoting but on the same line. I comic that
doesn’t look read is a complete waste.

I think it was Cheetos (or Nacho Cheese Doritos?) smudges. All I have to do is lend mine to one of my kids and then it looks pretty lived in.
September 11th, 2009 at 7:35 am
lol betsy…my daughter would cut out all the
pics of the characters and paste them in her
hello kitty scrapbook. That I’d have to draw
the line at…pizza sauce okay, hello kitty not
okay.

That’s funny James! Mine are in college so I don’t have to worry about Hello Kitty. At least, I don’t think I do.
Ok, now I’m worried.

Joe, is the Locke & Key special edition available at the comic book store or a regular book store?
September 11th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Just got mine( the special edition). Plus I had to revise my pull list.
The one thing that surprised me was the price for the special edition, it was really, really pretty reasonable. I was actually expecting to pay about twice that price.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Damn, just discoverd that they have a variant(special edition)—-im glad that they put that in the bag as well.

Chalk up one vote from me for Joe Hill as best comic book writer!
Condolences to the family of Seth Fisher, My eyes say “A great Artist who had a wealth of priceless talent which He shared with all of us.”
If theres such a thing as an Art-Q scale like an I-Q, then He was an ArtaMensa member for sure!
I’m calling River Run for one of those variant copies of Head Games vol 1. Hopefully they have a copy of Locke and Key vol. 1. as well.
I keep striking out in my local comic book store. I bought vol’s. 2-6 signed copies there, buuutt the availability status kept changing “Try next week” AGAIN!! Judas priest! I almost got roped into babysitting the store clerk’s 3 yr. old boy for a week during my vacation. Then I felt like a jerk for suggesting that the boy go to a structured daycare! Now I avoid the store. Anyways I’m hoping to score one ((of each)) signed.
Thanks for the good stuff Joe!

Grasshopper,
LOCKE & KEY: HEAD GAMES is the hardcover collection of the six-issue HEAD GAMES story arc. There’s no variant. And River Run Books will have copies for everyone who wants one.
They’ll also have the first LOCKE & KEY hardcover, WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT, and if you buy that one as well, I’m glad to sign. Remember, I’ll sign up to three books for you, and as long as one of them is HEAD GAMES, the other two can be any of my other books (WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT, HEART-SHAPED BOX, or 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS).
The Seth Fisher story appears in the Special Edition of L&K: Welcome To Lovecraft #1, which reprints the very first LOCKE & KEY story. For that one, you’d have to order online, or visit your friendly neighborhood comic book store; River Run is unlikely to stock it.

Just placed my order for Head Games, cannot wait…..
September 13th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Hi, Joe.
Quick question about the signing of the books: When you say you’ll sign up to 3 as long as one is the new Locke & Key: Head Games, do you mean that all 3 must come from (be purchased in) the River Run bookstore? Or are we able to send in up to two books we already own, as long as we buy Head Games from the bookstore to be signed with them? (and of course pay all shipping charges both ways).
Thanks!
John

Thank -you for your reply Joe !! It is much appreciated !
I’m definately buying 3 of your books . I was impressed by HEART SHAPED BOX and soon after finishing it, bought 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS. “You will hear the locust sing” is one of the best graphic horror shorts I’ve read. I chuckled the next day, having to open and work at “The Grasshopper shop”.. hence my profile name here.
Finally I discovered Locke and Key. What a trip , Love your Craft!

Greetings from Denmark. This is a nice blog. Does anyone have any advice about staying out of the friend zone with women? I’m really tired of girls telling me they just want to be friends. Maybe I’m being too nice?
