Shadowplay
From the department of things too good not to share: here’s the inked variant cover for issue one of LOCKE & KEY: CROWN of SHADOWS. I think it’s just about the most freak-fucking-tacular cover Gabe has done on L&K to date.
And before you ask: early November.

It looks cool. It reminds me of an anime I saw last week. I can’t wait for Crown of Shadows. There’s just as much talent emanating from Locke & Key as there is at the Horror Writers site. That can be overwhelming for someone like me.
Trying to stay positive these days. We have to be nice to others even if it’s an effort sometimes. In other words, we have to watch what we put out to the universe. It often comes back to haunt us.
Several years ago, I had a professor who I didn’t really care for. I eventually dropped his class because it nauseated me. Three years later, I found out he succumbed to a chronic fatal illness. I wouldn’t say it was karma because what happened between us probably has nothing to do with his outcome. Nevertheless, I didn’t shed a single tear when he was gone.
Through no fault of my own, a number of people who have irritated me have either ended up dead or challenged in some way. It’s rather strange.
But at the same time, a lot of really nice people have also left my life. The good have a tendency to die young. I suppose that God needs them more than we do. I’ve chosen to believe what Gary Zukav, the author of “The Seat of the Soul” tell us. “The universe is wise and compassionate.”
I love black and white animation. It looks so classic. It reminds you of a simpler time. And sometimes you get sick of certain colors. Some artists use tints that you don’t particularly care for. But the software available these days enables you to do a lot more than you could by using traditional methods.
Someday I will hire an editor, I promise.

The scene that image is inspired by was an absolute blast to flat. How the hell Gabe kept track of all the layers of lines is beyond me.

Wow…amazing! That brings all kinds of questions to my mind about which way L&K is headed. Thanks for posting that Joe. Great work G!

Thanks a lot, everybody! This is a sample of the new “feeling” that this third arc is going to have….
Joe is making me draw the toughest sequences ever, but the story is incredibly cool!
Hope you’ll all enjoy it!
Best,
G-

And here I was, hoping we’d get a break from the insanity after Seduth…
Damn you, Joe! *shakes shriveled, atrophied fist*

Wow! Really gorgeous work, Gabriel! Can’t wait to study it more closely (if i get the chance, that is.)
It doesn’t seem like along wait until Crown of Shadows will be in our hands. Thanks to Joe and Gabe and everyone involved for all of your hard work in getting L&K to us!

Indeed he is creepier…. I think a bad person is always creepier than any monster…

“A bad person is always creepier than any monster…”
You can say that again. I work on the ambulance, and we had so many crime calls this summer, I got to see a whole lot of police work.
Some people really are just bad to the bone, like my friend, Greg, said. He’s a Patrol Officer. He does Street Patrol in Arizona.
I’ve gone on ride-along with him-that’s where I sit in his car and watch him do his work-and I’ve seen for myself people who are worse than monsters.
Like the guy he arrested who was seen, by several witnesses, molesting a really young girl. Greg was putting the guy in the back of the cruiser and the guy looked at him with no hint of a smile and said “She flirted with me.”
Greg, who almost never gets upset, told the guy to sit there and shut up and stay that way until we get to holding.
I don’t see how he does his job at all. I would be upset like that ALL the time. Especially at the ones who play all those stupid games of growing suddenly stupid, incoherent and/or teary-eyed every time the cops ask for information from them.
I think Greg’s a special person. He’s always really nice to me.

Bad person creepier than a monster is so true, Gabe!
Thanks very much for including pages on how you do your magic!
( With Pen and ink) You are a HUGE dose of inspiration for myself and many other’s to keep working the Art and stay creative.
I look forward to my very own freak-fuckin-tacular copy of Shadowplay!

Great points…I would note that as someone who really doesn’t write on blogs much (in fact, this may be my first post), I don’t think the term “lurker” is very becoming to a non-posting reader. It’s not your fault at all, but perhaps the blogosphere could come up with a better, non-creepy name for the 90% of us that enjoy reading the posts.
