Lockin’ the Vote
Blair Butler’s vote, anyway… Locke & Key: Crown of Shadows #5 is out as of last Wednesday, and Blair Butler just named it her pick of the week. Today is Free Comic Book day, so it’s a good time to visit your local comic store, and if you’re going to be in there anyhow, why not pick yerself up a copy? (No, it’s not free, but a practically-free L&K is in the works for sometime down the road)
And here’s what Miz B had to say about the penultimate issue of CoS:

Joe,
If you have time, you may want to check out my book review of Horns for The Las Vegas Review Journal’s book blog, The Book Nook. Google the newspaper and then scroll down to the listing of their blog and click on The Book Nook. You also will probably have to scroll down to the bottom of the first page or onto the beginning of page 2 for The Book Nook, since the review was posted back in March. It’s a pretty good review of your fantastic novel. The review will also appear on the new horror website, df_underground: the dark fiction portal within the next week or two. They just posted my review of your dad’s Blockade Billy a couple of days ago. They have a link on Facebook. Anyway, I’m getting ready to start reading Throttle in He Is Legend. I’m curious as to how you and your dad rewrote Duel.
All the best,
Wayne

Joe,
Congratulations to you, Gabe and the team for being pick of the week at “Fresh Ink”..Again!
Ms. Butler looked beside herself, impressed by L&K and I cannot
WAIT to see it with me own eyes!
Thank You for sticking to your craft through thick and thin, as you
had spoken about on “The Hour”with Geoge Stephanopolous
( link back a few posts).
Your work will entertain and inspire many, like me for years to come! The pay-off is the jewel that”money cant buy”, y’know?!
May 2nd, 2010 at 6:17 am
It deserves it…What a great issue. Congrats to you and Gabe.
May 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 am
Dammmmnnnn….figured that is all that needed to be said.

None of those pictures looked better than Gabriel’s, and only one came close to matching his expertise. It was the one about The Plague. I think it was that one. The others didn’t meet the same standard of Awesome that Gabriel’s does.
Not having read any of the other authors, I can’t comment on their writing quality. I know I’ve loved everything I’ve read in L&K so far. Especially the first volume, which I’ve read more of than any other.

Awesome. I hope nothing bad happens to the mother in issue 6. I feel a kindred spirit with her. The artwork is unbelievably and storyline continues to impress. I’m with my new UNCOOL friends now part was wonderful. I’ll be donating my Walking Dead trade comics to my local library soon but unfortunately for them I think I will be keeping all my Locke & Key issues for myself. That other vampire comic was sold out because my comic store had a sale that I missed but many others didn’t. Duel rewritten???

On another topic, has anyone received their limited editions from PS Publishing of HORNS? Impressive, to say the least.
May 5th, 2010 at 11:00 am
just one quick note to horns
since i am from germany i always kept an eye open on amazon.de to see when the german version of horns will appear and what the titel might be. well, thats a shock: the german title for horns is TEUFELSZEUG which i think you can take as a very clumsy translation of DEVIL TOOLS (very, very clumsy).but hey, the cover is great. check it out!
May 5th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
I have received my traycase of HORNS from PS…I also never received my signed UK HORNS from forbidden planet. Kinda pissed off about it…..emails have been sent…forbidden suggested a refund…PS, no reply yet.
May 5th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
meant to say have not received my traycase of horns or the UK edition.

I don’t think Nina is going to have an exit in the next issue. She already had her drunken Ke$la intervention and it would make no sense having Uncle Dunkin as the guardian after his mishap. I’m thinking Kinsey will be the one affected during Crown of Shadows #6. She’s my favorite character too, but it kind of makes sense since she’s all Daredevil now(the man without fear), kind of burned Zack/Dodge, the object of Sam Lesser’s affection and he’s a ghost, and the fact she has never been killed and turned into a ghost yet as her siblings have. I’m not saying she will be out of the picture after either, because the place is haunted after all.
…But that’s just my theory.

NewEnglandGothic,
Shhhhhh!!! Don’t tempt the powers that be……..
May 6th, 2010 at 7:38 am
I know. After Locke & Key #3, Kinsey has been my favorite Locke child(I even told Joe that at a Manchester, NH convention) and it pains me to say her mortality might be in jeopardy. I was also just commenting on Gabriel Rodriguez’s art revealing Nina all broken. Isn’t she broken now, so it could mean she is just coming back together? I heard the plot is about her finding a key to a cabinet that fixes broken things. G-Rod’s art is tricky like that, like his Head games #5 cover. Was Dodge getting out of Duncan’s head or just getting in?

Gabriel Rodriguez’ action compositions for C.O.S #5 are wickedly
fanfuciktastical!
Some mighty fine coffee down there in Chile, must be part of the secret! ( Ha! Alot of good work from a cup of Joe !!)
The variant cover is very special. I took it that Tyler has a great fighting “shadow” of his own…must be what comes from within his spirit, because the armored man shadow with a fist ” like a bag of hammers” only appears on the variant cover, all other scenes when
Tyler is huge are the human form of “Ty”!
That is how I interpret it anyways.. Gabe, Your AWESOME !!!
Joe, you Rock too!
May 7th, 2010 at 9:22 am
dammit! i saw the claw key!
so that is the next one
May 7th, 2010 at 9:28 am
NewEnglandGothic can you tell me where you found the image of the broken nina please?
thanks;-)
May 7th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Hi nils,
I got it from in back of Crown Of Shadows #5, previewing for issue #6 of Crown Of Shadows.
May 8th, 2010 at 1:49 pm
PS pub STILL HAS NOT ANSWERED MY EMAILS in regards to my slipcased version of HORNS or my replacement for a damaged traycase. This is very irritating.
May 8th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Only excuse is that there is a huge backlog of mail…..geesh..have to give PS the benefit of a doubt
May 8th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I have at least one other thing I want to say about that video of Top Picks.
I can’t believe they STILL beep out the cuss words.
Even when I was a kid, I knew a beep meant a swear word was in there, and my mom & dad used to swear-sometimes-so I could guess what might have been inserted in the beep.
I think kids will be harmed by actions more than words, but I’m speaking from personal experience. And it’s my opinion.
May 8th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Next time we go see Joe…there will be 3 of us.
May 9th, 2010 at 1:45 am
Blair has a beautiful head of hair. They say a woman’s hair is her crown. Nice crown Blair. But for some strange reason I see her smoking cigarettes and drinking bottled beer out of a brown paper bag outside of a cellphone store picking on 15 year old boys leaving the local comic shop yelling “Hey bitch you still reading that rag?” Using her knowledge to pick on the youngsters. I don’t know why I feel that way about her but I’m almost certain that’s her. Don’t get me wrong you guys I’d still do her but still I see her like that. Nobody has that much knowledge about comics without an attitude. But that’s her job. I know this much, I would like to be the one who lights her cigarettes.
May 9th, 2010 at 1:49 am
And another thing. Nemesis Blair????? You missed one girlfriend.
May 9th, 2010 at 7:45 am
Mark?!?! For real?!?!
May 9th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
we have to go to the doctor for a 100% confirmation. But, ept test says yes….lol.
May 10th, 2010 at 7:08 am
There must be something in the water! I’ll have my fingers crossed for you and Mary!
May 10th, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Thanks BB. 420pm tomorrow is when we may find out for sure.
May 10th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
You also have the Top Pick in my personal list of books I’ve been reading. For Horns.
You’re tied w/ a guy named Thomas H. Cook, but he writes murder mysteries, so he’s not in the same category as yours.
And I can read his books, so far, b/c he always addresses how the murder affects the victim and his or her family and friends. He goes way in depth about it, more so than any mystery writer I’ve read. Even Mary Higgins Clark doesn’t address it in as much depth as this guy.
I wish I could write him a letter and tell him about how much I like that, but I don’t know where to find his address.
He’s a New England writer, but he’s lived in New York City too. He lives in Cape Cod now.
He was born in September, 1947, and the book I just finished was about a murder that happened in August, 1947. Just an observation, but it probably doesn’t mean anything.
BTW congratulations M&M-mostly mark. I hope I got that name right.
May 10th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Vicki….yes maam, you did. Thank you. We find out for certain tomorrow.
May 11th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Hey, great news, M&M…
Congratulations and my very best wishes from the southern corner of the world!

May 12th, 2010 at 4:38 am
ITs confirmed. The doctor confirmed that Mary is pregnant with our first child.
May 12th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
Hey Mark and Mary: Congratulations are in order. **Where’s my wine glass?** A little good news is great!
Have you heard from PS Publishing yet? I’ve emailed them as well and they must be exceedingly busy as I too have not heard from them of late.
May 12th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
“Happy and scared” Mark? Sounds absolutely normal! Congrats to you both! This is so exciting!
May 12th, 2010 at 11:32 pm
Thanks everyone.
Barry-ive just heard from Pete from PS. He told me that some people are just now receiving their books because of the volcano. I will get back in touch with him friday night if it hasnt come in by then.
Sucks, just grease burnt my wrist and its killing me to type. lol
May 13th, 2010 at 7:47 am
Just heard from Pete too. Just have to be patient. The volcano really slowed down shipping books to North America.
May 14th, 2010 at 12:49 am
Speaking of volcanic activity, how the heck do you pronounce the one that occurred on May 9 in Iceland. I only saw it online; no idea how you’d even begin to pronounce that.
May 14th, 2010 at 8:52 am
What’s the magazine called that has Joe’s story in it and there’s a man being hanged on its cover. I ordered a copy and just remembered I haven’t received it. My mind is fuddled this morn.
May 14th, 2010 at 9:30 am
Hi Barry,
I think you are looking for Grave Tales #6 from Cemetery Dance comics. It is also reprinted(in glorious Jay Fotos color)in Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft Special Edition #1 too.
May 14th, 2010 at 9:59 am
That’s it, NewEnglandGothic. A million thanks.
May 15th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
It looks like some stuff might be going out on Tuesday from PS.
May 15th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Im ready to give my kid a name….
May 17th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
What is PS? I can’t find the original words for the initials, and I wondered what it is?
IDK if it’s a result of having lived in Hollywood, the real Hollywood as opposed to the glamorous, celebrity- and cocaine-filled one, but I have this intense belief that ordinary people are just as important to the world as famous ones.
Based on the ones I treated when I worked in the Hollywood Hills, I’d even go as far to say ordinary people are BETTER than that. More than 90% of the celebrities we treated were using drugs like cocaine and heroin and didn’t give a shit about anybody but themselves. And I won’t even go into detail about how they thought they were allowed to talk to us. One boldly declared she’d ‘take away [my] job w/ one phone call.’
I thought ‘Yeah right. Someone who’s tanked up on 90 tons of cocaine and I’M the one w/ the problem. Dumbass bitch.’
Since then, I’ve been terribly unimpressed w/ the entire celebrity thing, no matter what form it takes. It’s also why it may seem like I’m not as much of a fan as I am.
Everything about me is subdued b/c, in order to survive working in Emergency Medicine, it has to be that way. The habit of seeming subdued becomes ingrained in you after a while, but I don’t like how it makes me look like I don’t care as much as others.
IDK why I felt like sharing that, but I’m not upset I did-and I’ll understand if it has to be deleted.
May 17th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
I hope you don’t stop doing comics after the last issue. I’m only on the first issue, and I like it a lot.
May 17th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
PS=PS Publishing
May 17th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
I just checked out PS Publishing’s web site.
All I can say is you have to have a lot more money than I do to buy it.
Which reminds me to ask if anybody knows what a slipcover hard back is.
May 19th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
Vicki, I am assuming you mean Slip Cased Hardcover. Many limited edition books come with a case just large enough to slide the book into. This is revered to as a Slip Case and is used to keep the book and it’s dustcover or cover in good condition. Many small press publishers include Slip Cases with some of the more collectible books they sell. They are made for that book often with attributes that compliment the book. Hope this helps.
May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Does anyone know when the next L&K is due out?
May 20th, 2010 at 12:13 am

Mark& Mary,
Addressed in today’s blog post. And I said it on Twitter, but thought I’d say it here, too: big, big congrats on the baby news. Take care of your little guy/gal. They’re a blast. A little stressful once they figure out that walking thing. But always a blast.
May 24th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Thanks Joe.
