The Chalk-Off Five
This year’s theme was a tough one – Pre-50′s comic characters – but we still had a fair number of entries, and the overall quality of the individual submissions was very high. One entry was downright astonishing; another was even better. Shane and I had a lot of fun doing our judging thing. Our picks follow the jump.
5th Place:
From Christina.
4th Place:
Art by Erica. Yes, it’s true, it was done on paper, not sidewalk, but the artist in question is housebound at the moment.
3rd Place:
The Big Dick and his arch nemesis Highbrow, courtesy of Sean.
2nd Place:
Katherine takes second with this deliriously accurate depiction of Mr. Bumstead. Just looking at it makes me hungry for a sandwich too big to fit in my mouth.
And..
1st:
By Stephanie. Little Nemo finds himself, not uncharacteristically, all at sea. It’s a stunner, Steph – a dreamy August hallucination. Good for you. The iPod will be shipping shortly.
And my thanks to everyone who played my silly little summer game. I had a blast. Hope you enjoyed it too.

Stephanie’s coloring is just gorgeous and her shading made that just step right off the sidewalk. Vibrant.
Dagwood– very precise and spot on.
But, where’s The Big Dick? I want to see The Big Dick.
Christina and Erica, well done also. Great renditions.
congratulations everybody! Super job and thanks to our host and his sidekick, Joe and Shane, for another fun contest.

Wow, those pictures are incredible. Now I’m really glad I didn’t enter my chalk-drawing of two stickmen playing billiards, and using each other for cues.
Amazing work. Congrats to the winners.

Congrats to all the winners! My travel and moving schedule prevented me from creating an entry, but I’m glad someone got Felix the cat in there, he was going to be my pick. The #1 winner, however… that is clearly artistry worthy of an iPod. Beautiful.

I am so excited! Thank you Joe & Shane. Congrats to all the other winners – Katherine, I was especially impressed by your Bumstead.
Thanks so much for all the kind comments. I would love to tell you that I just churned that out one afternoon, but the truth is that it was no less than my 3rd attempt and took the better part of whole day (I REALLY wanted to win). I had so much fun doing it – the last time I created anything in sidewalk chalk I was quite a bit shorter

Mine’s apparently saved as a TIFF, which doesn’t render on all browsers … you can see a different (composite) version of it here, which might be a little more legible:

Thanks, Joe and Shane! Stephanie, I knew a beautiful Winsor McCay was bound to take the top prize, but I had no idea how beautiful it might be.

Wow. If I had not known this was a sidewalk chalk art contest than I would never know Stephanie’s was drawn on a sidewalk with chalk. Astounding.

My nephew, Gabriel, loves to draw and do other artwork.
For his last birthday, I got him chalk for drawing on the sidewalk.
They’re giant pieces of chalk, enough to keep him busy. : )
I’m allergic to chalk. I found that out in school. I had to take a Kleenex and put the chalk inside it to be able to write on the board. I have a chalk holder now, but I don’t use it often. Even the smell of chalk makes me sneeze uncontrollably, and I dislike being around it.
