Aswim in Prizes
Less than two weeks before the Love-Your-Indie contest finishes up (those just hearing about the contest will find all the basic info here), and there are still a few prizes to announce. Here’s two more:
• a signed Advance Reader’s Edition of BAD THINGS by Michael Marshall Smith
&
• a signed hardcover of the-insanely-hard-to-get AGENT TO THE STARS by John Scalzi.
My thanks to John and Michael for offering up these books to support the contest and indie bookstores.
I also wanted to pass on my thanks to everyone who has already entered the contest, and everyone who has twittered about it, or blogged about it, or just told a friend… all the positive word-of-mouth has helped the contest capture a lot more attention than I would’ve anticipated (I was figuring on, like, about 11 entries).
A few folks are still not entirely clear what qualifies as an indie. There’s a very cool resource, Indiebound, which makes it easy for U.S. book buyers to find their closest indie bookstore(s); if it’s listed here it counts. Of course, if you shop at a locally owned, independently operated bookstore that isn’t on this list, don’t worry; your entry would still be valid. I’m aware that probably thousands of small used bookstores, religious bookstores, comic book shops, and so on are not listed with Indiebound, and entries from such places count too.
For those who are truly in the middle of nowhere, remember that you can buy from an online indie; I’ve seen several receipts from Abe’s Books and Powell’s and a great many small bookshops offer some way to shop on the web. You can also buy something from an independent bookseller who sells through Amazon or Barnes & Noble (indie operators provide Amazon and B&N with most, if not all, of their used and out-of-print stuff).
Some people have sent in some very amusing photos of their receipts (occasionally set artfully atop their pile of literary loot, and in one case pasted to the buyer’s forehead). I’d post some of the pics, but I did promise privacy…
I’m fiddling with the newest version of Word Press, and planning another post on a different subject today, just a question of whether I’ll have the time.

[...] BUT WAIT! There’s more. As this thing goes along, I’ll be adding other signed editions of other books for other randomly drawn winners. Stay tuned. (March 19 update: as promised, lots and lots of other prizes have been added since the contest began; there will now be at least 24 winners, with a rare or limited edition of something going to each randomly drawn entry; see here, here, and here) [...]

Ok…I’m back. Whew! I just had to say I read MMS’s STRAW MEN and really, really liked it. And of course, Scalzi’s website is sooooo funny. I was just talking about his visit to the Creation Museum. I was rolling on the floor! Honestly, I’m beginning to think I don’t have a chance to win anything since so many folks are jumping on the band wagon, but I really hope I do. I’d love ANY of these wonderful prizes!
PS…I finished my copy of MAUS, Vol. I that I bought at my Indie Comic Book Store and LOVED IT!! I gotta get Vol. II as soon as I can!

Can I just say, THANK YOU? As an indie bookseller in a terrible economy, campaigns like this are shop savers.
