The Shortlist, The Graphic Details & Horns
Just a few days ago I heard that Gunpowder made the shortlist for this year’s British Fantasy Awards, while Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft wound up on the final ballot for best comic/graphic novel. If you’re looking for something good to read, you’ll find a lot of material worthy of your attention over on the full ballot; check it out. My thanks to everyone in the BFS for the support.
I’ve been a lazyass about posting on the blog, but only because I haven’t been a lazyass about work – I’ve been putting in pretty full, satisfying days at the computer, and when I’m done I’m not much in the mood to wax all eloquent here on the website. A bit of harmless twittering is usually about the best I can manage. Buuut, if you really feel like you can’t get through the week without a big slice of my gab, I did an interview with Graphic Novel Reporter the other day.
Finally, people have been wondering when the next book is out. I was keeping my mouth shut on the subject for a very good reason: I didn’t know. Now I do – February.

OK, back to modeling nucleation using lennard-jones potential

Thanks for sharing all that Joe. A lot of familiar names on the “Shortlist”. I can’t imagine how it must feel to you or to your Dad that you have both been (very deservedly) nominated. As you know, I love L&K and I loved “Gunpowder”. I also loved “N”…it was the ultimate creep-out! I’m sorry that Gabriel wasn’t on the list. He should’ve been, although it was good to see Mr. Chong there.
Loved the interview too. I think you might’ve re-phrased your description of “Echo” if you really wanted your wife to read it. I know I wouldn’t have wanted to read it having it described that way! And thank you so much for coming out of the closet on “The Last Starfighter”! I’ve never had the guts to tell anyone how much I love that movie!
And finally, I am so happy to hear about the due date for Horns, although I wish it were sooner! I can’t wait!

Horns. Immediately I thought about a herd of cattle, all horny and all you know. Then I paused, and thought: perhaps traffic jams with all cars hauntingly blowing their horns when all passengers are dead. I’m mad.
Joe, great news about Gunpowder, etc.
Yesterday, I received a BIG box and I must say I panted as I opened it. It was a signed, limited copy of Locke & Key from Subterranean Press. I think I died and went to heaven.

In my best Homer Tom Tom voice…”Woohoo!”
Damn, The Last Starfighter…that brings me
back to childhood. I’m remembering a stand
up video game in front of a star and a bunch
of creepy looking aliens.
Congrats on the nods!

I meant store…not star…

I remember listeing to “quiet riot” while riding to little league pratice n my brothers old 1972 yellow and white GM truck .

Vehicles where made out of metal in those days. You could work on your car without having to worry about a computer chip in the engine. Engines where referred to as 325,350 or the stallone 425. Tv’s sat on the floor and Johnny cash was playing on the record player. We taped songs off the radio. Terminator was playing at the drive-in.

I love The Last Starfighter! What a blast from the past! LOL
Barry, congrats on the book.

Excellent! These next few months are going to be much longer than normal. And congratulations to you and Gabriel on the nomination, well deserved!
June 19th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I’m so sorry Gabriel…I said you weren’t on the list when obviously you ARE for L&K. Forgive me? Anyway, congratulations to you & Joe. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you!
June 19th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Haha!
Don’t worry, Betsy. Nothing to apologize for. I’m certainly proud for L&K’s nomination, but our readers support is far more significant that any other possible prize.
So thanks to all already, and of course congratulations to the other nominees. Just been surrounded by such a collection of talented creators is a great honor.

And now I’m going to do the happy dance in anticipation of February.

Joe
Will you being doing any signed editions with any publishing houses on Horns?
I know that Pete from PS Publishing and you are pretty tight
June 20th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Personally, I would rather see it from Subterranean as PS books are generally smaller size books. Plus Subterranean did such a great job with HSB.

But…but…you have to tell us more. You tease.
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Huge congratulations for all of the above, Joe. I thought GUNPOWDER was a beautiful little book, and thoroughly deserving of the nomination. Perhaps the finest 19,000 words I’ve read this year.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I can’t wait until February!
Congrats on making the shortlist!
June 28th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Congratulations Joe. Hope you win your awards. I heard from Owen. He’s really cool. He wished me good luck with my projects.
June 28th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
I miss you Joe. Hope you’re OK.
June 29th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
After February I’ll take my suicide pill…
June 29th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Huh?
June 30th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
hold back on that statement Christopher, little heavy for this site, thats nothing to joke about…
June 30th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Dear Christopher,
You must…visit this site.

P.S. See you at nin.com. I know who you are.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Dear Christopher,
Go here if you need support.

Never suppose that you’re alone.

Chris – er, ditto what herbie1976 said. In general, suicide jokes always fall a little flat online; folks worry. If you aren’t joking, then let people know you’re struggling, either online, or out there in the real world, and get the support you need. What’s up?
July 1st, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I am completely sorry Hill and fans. I have a morbid sense of humor and sometimes forget it is hard to detect if you don’t use “laugh out loud”s or other hints. I apologize if I caused people to worry and everything is fine.
Gee– I feel kinda like a buzz-kill, now. Um, go “Horns”?
July 1st, 2009 at 8:52 pm
No worries; I kinder had an idea you were going for teh funny and wound up in teh worrisome by accident. Glad you’re well, thanks for the kind words re: HORNS.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:29 am
Really, really glad to hear that Chris! I am one of those folks that freak a little when I hear (or read) anyone say anything about suicide. It’s just one of those red flag words for me. I did sorta have the idea that you were saying that after February you could die happy, once you’ve gotten the chance to read HORNS. But keep in mind it will be a while before L&K is done!!
July 10th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Joe,
How about coming down south on the book tour? We’d love to meet you!
Cheers,
DP
July 12th, 2009 at 6:36 am
I second that, Parker!
July 26th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Joe. Lori and I missed you at SDCC this year. I got stationed up here in Bangor Washington and had to take Lori from Mysterious Galaxy with me. I still say it’s Spinal Tap regardless of AC DC’s Who Made Who. By the way, Do you ever think you will come up here for a signing?
