Coming Soon
Been seeing the cover of HORNS around the net, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to post it here.

Yeah, it’s another heart-warmer.
Update (later in the day): First, it has come to my attention that this is post #999. Which is – gulp – 666 upside down. Probably just one of those funny coincidences.
Second, there’s been a few questions in the comments thread that it probably makes sense to answer within the post itself. Here goes:
Q: When does the book come out?
A: February.
Q: But in an earlier post we saw you holding the book itself. Why such a long wait?
A: Aw, shit, guys, I hate to be a total letdown, but that wasn’t really the book. It was a dummy – someone else’s book, with a prototype of the final cover stuck on it (for the curious, the book inside the cover was Step by Step: A Pedestrian Memoir by a great American novelist, Lawrence Block).
Q: Who’s publishing?
A: William Morrow in America, Orion in the U.K. I don’t believe they’ve announced it, but PS Publishing will also be doing a limited print run with some Vincent Chong artwork. PS will almost certainly offer an edition that is signed and numbered.
And to head off a few other questions that weren’t asked but might be: it’s a little bit longer than Heart-Shaped Box (only a little), and currently there are plans for an unabridged audio recording. We’re still a long way off, though, so more than I couldn’t tell you.

Very nice Joe. It has that “aren’t you just dying to find out whats inside” look to it. Can’t wait,
August 7th, 2009 at 8:19 am
Very cool.
August 7th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Looking forward to reading it!
August 7th, 2009 at 9:41 am
GREAT cover!
Amazing design.
And I completely agree with the quote about revenge….
August 7th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Winter can come soon enough
August 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
That is pretty cool.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:09 am
AArrghhh!!! I want!!!!
August 7th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Ohhh, February is so far away… Not sure I’ll make it… sob…
August 7th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Long wait, but I’m sure it will be worth it. I’m wondering if Horns is a reference not just to the devil in the details but the old Italian euphemism of putting horns on a man, i.e. cuckoldry. Heh.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
I can’t wait to read this pup!
August 7th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
I am so looking forward to this book!
I am amazed that there have been 10 posts and no one has thrown out a “horny” joke.
I am curious, a few posts ago, Joe showed us the book. I am assuming that it is done on his part. I am also assuming that what he is displaying is a proof of some kind. With that said, why a February release? Does it take a long time to print or is it dictated by the publisher?
I know, I know, patience is s virtue.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Shoot me an email if you want to send me a copy so I can proof read it. It’ll be on the house. : )
August 7th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
When’s is it due out Joe is it this winter or Feb next year?
Also will there be any signed/numbered, signed/limited editions?
And finally what publishing house is doing it?
Sorry for the question overload!!

I had said in an earlier posting, when I thought of Horns, I thought about horny cows. Now that I see the jacket, the pitch fork, perhaps the book is based on a farm. Just guessing.
August 7th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
LOL. Barry, good one. The lives of horny cows and their desire to break away to start anew.
August 7th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

August 7th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
OK, now im getting excited.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I bet it wins a Bram Stroker
August 7th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
DO you consider this a “darker” tale than HSB.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Can’t wait! I reviewed “Heart Shaped Box” and “20th Century Ghosts” on my blog and on LibraryThing. I would love to be on the list for a review copy.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Awesome cover! Eagerly awaiting to grab a copy of your newest work, Joe.
P.S. 999 means double the evil inside >:^)
August 7th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Hey Joe…How about a tiny little blurb? Just a little description, beyond it being about revenge, the devil and farm animals? (Good one Barry!) Sometimes you can be just a teensy bit sadistic with your teasing! You must drive your wife CRAZY!! Anyway, I love the cover and if you do decide to give out any ARCs put me on the list. I promise I won’t tell!
August 7th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
999? That’s a double goocher! Yikes!

I was wrong about horny bulls. [Cows, of course, do not have horns. Or do they?]
August 7th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Great, Joe. Can hardly wait. If there’s an audio, I hope the same person is hired as did 20th Century Ghosts. I listen to that when I am on the road all the time.

999 is England’s version of “911″
I’ve bought “Heart-Shaped Box” 3 times and have gotten 6 people addicted to your writing.
And, since this seems to be a numbers post, my favorite will always be 19.
August 8th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Need…Horns…soon!!! February…far away!!!

I live in hope. After all, as long as there’s life there’s hope.
I didn’t make that up. My daughter’s dad used to say it all the time.
I never grasped its meaning while he was alive. It seems like some things can only come from experience, and I had to endure what happened to him before I finally got the meaning. Or put the two, life and hope, together.
I like this site, b/c I don’t get dissed or attacked in any other way on here. I’ve been receiving so many hate comments from You Tube (YT) it’s unreal.
I’m treated that way at work by disgruntled patients. I don’t want it in my personal life.
I’m not quitting YT, that would be ridiculous, but I’m taking a break from all that immaturity until I feel like putting up with it again. Consequently, I’ll be exploring more of this site.
My friend’s an MCSA certified Systems Analyst and Computer Programmer. He said those who abuse others on the Internet will become known by the Web Masters, whatever that is, and the ‘cyberbullies’ will receive consequences for their actions.
I haven’t noticed that on YT, but I’m glad their programmers finally made a channel where you can complain about the REALLY bad comments.
I HAVE noticed that this site has practically no abuse at all, an added reason I like it here so much.
I’m addicted to being on the Internet. I figure if I’m paying that much to have a connection, why NOT use it all the time.

Joe-
It looks great; I’m sitting on jagged glass waiting for it. I hope it sells 66,600 on the first day.
On an alternate topic, would it seem too pushy to ask about your short story/novella career? Really, that is where my love of all things Joe Hill lies. If you feel up to it, please give this question a shot. Many thanks.
August 9th, 2009 at 11:43 am
John,
That’s probably the subject for a whole different post. The short answer would be that I’ve got about 1/4th of a new collection done, and a new novella, GUNPOWDER, came out last Christmas. There’ll be some more GUNPOWDER stories coming down the pike – the next one, SLAVE GIRLS OF GUNPOWDER, ought to be out at some point next year – and I’m hoping to spend a bunch of 2010 banging out new short stories. I still love the short fiction form, and in some ways I’m more comfortable writing the 8,000 word story than I am anything else, but this year I’m occupied with a few other larger scale projects.
August 9th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
That’s great to hear, Joe. Always look forward to new stuff from you.
August 9th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Wow…what makes John so special? You answered his question but not mine. Are you intentionally ignoring me? I will not be ignored! (Quick…who said that in what movie?)
Just kidding.
“Slave Girls of Gunpowder”?? Really?
August 10th, 2009 at 4:02 am
I won’t ignore you, Betsy. “Horns” is the second novel by Joe Hill and it’s a story that will include characters, plot, a climax, and an ending. It will come out in February of 2009.

Thanks BK. That clears up a lot. I wish your first post was true and then I’d already have it!
August 10th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Yeah after it posted I thought to myself, “Shit. Well that’s what I get for being a smartass.”
August 10th, 2009 at 8:56 am
HORNS…why didn’t I think of the devil?
…damn woodwind instruments ~ get out of my head!
I can’t wait for PS Publishing to offer up the limited.
August 10th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I hope there is going to be an awesome site, like heart shaped box had!!??? loved the music on that site.
August 10th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Thanks, Joe! Can’t wait to have it in my hands. Glad to hear how busy you are…you’ll keep us reading for a long time, looks like. 2CG is in my Top 5 Best SS Collections so I’m thrilled there will be more to come.

It seems once upon a time in publishing everything stayed mum until just before the release date because they didn’t want to waste a day of publicity before availability. It seems to no longer be the conventional wisdom. The new method is apparently to taunt those of us with the emotional maturity and self-discipline of five-year-olds the night before Christmas. Anticipation is a bitch. I can’t even read comic books anymore until they are released as the full book.
August 22nd, 2009 at 7:25 am
LOL! I like that Rose…”emotional maturity and self-discipline of five-year-olds the night before Christmas.” You’ve pretty much summed me up!
And yeah…what’s up with that? They start promoting some movies 6 months before they come out! By the time they do actually come out it’s like old news.
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Totally. I watch “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and I’m kind of like Veruca has a bit of a point.

I don’t mind if it’s longer than HSB. I once read that book ‘The Stand’ when it had about a 1000 pages, and I read the book ‘It,’ which was even longer.
I had more trouble making my way through ‘It’ than ‘The Stand,’ especially when it turned out to be a spider.
I have this unspeakable terror and revulsion at the sight, or even thought, of the 8-legged crawlies. I stopped almost at the book’s end so, technically, I DIDN’T make it through ‘It’ but finished ‘The Stand,’ in which no spiders put in an appearance. Thank God.
My mom used to read ‘Gone With The Wind’ every single year, and that’s a huge book. She also watched the movie as frequently as she read the book.
I’m usually not into Romance novels, but I’m reading one now that’s set in Sydney, Australia. I’m only doing that, b/c I met a guy who’s from Melbourne, Australia. I “met” him through his videos, and he works for the web site. They pay him to make videos, and he has to follow all their terms of services, which makes me think he’s probably okay.
He’s taken anyway, but I didn’t know that when I first saw him. Almost all decent men are married or taken.
I’m learning a lot about Australia by reading this book. The guy verifies what she says in the book about the region.

Hmmm, in this Variety article Mandalay Pictures provides a snippet of the plot for their potential film adaptation: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118009805.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2562

its been a long time since i got the ‘horn’ for a book, but i really wish i were a bear right now so i could hibernate till its published…
January 7th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Absolutely loved Horns! Don’t worry – no spoilers here. Creepy, funny, raunchy, surprising, and I couldn’t put it down. I truly had a good time with it. The ARC looks like it’s been to hell and back – or just much loved. Your BN fans can’t wait to get our own copies! This will be an easy handsell and is a staff rec already. Congratulations and thanks so much for a great read.

I am translating it into Portuguese the House is Sestante.
It is amazing.
And
is giving me a hard time.
I love it
I actually don´t know how long it would take me to finish it. It is supposed to be done in 2 months. But I don´t believe I´ll be able to do it….
